Mythbeings, Hyperobjects, and the Phenomenology of Pilgrimage with Scout Rainer Wiley

September 15 @ 8:00 pm - 9:30 pm

Living Earth Youth Dialogue

Mythbeings, Hyperobjects, and the Phenomenology of Pilgrimage

Friday, September 15, 2023 from 6:00–7:30 pm PDT

Sharing From the Heart is a monthly initiative where young people from China and the United States come together around the pressing ecological, cultural, and spiritual issues of our time. Through sharing thoughts, personal stories, and actions in local settings, Chinese and American youth will begin building cross-cultural bonds to support a vision of a new, ecological civilization.

In this event, Scout Rainer Wiley will facilitate a discussion about the dynamics of pilgrimage. A transformative ritual necessary for nurturing the ecological consciousness of tomorrow, pilgrimages can reframe our understanding of spacetime as well as the subject/object distinction, awakening us to primordial and perennial truths that prepare us for greater environmental responsibility. Through storytelling and the sharing of land-based practises, Scout will offer insight into the structure and purpose of ritual expression and neoanimistic embodiment in the metamodern epoch.

SPEAKER: Scout Rainer Wiley

Yao Jiang

Scout Rainer Wiley is a writer, podcaster, and ritual performance artist from Brooklyn, New York. Considering the circumstances of their birth (at the hands of two Afrocentric hippies), they were always going to turn out weird–but the moment when everything really changed was when they were bitten by a radioactive Hawthorn bush at the 2022 Metamodern Spirituality Retreat. Now, they use their transdisciplinary curiosity to help solve the metacrisis, by studying and teaching about the relationship between ritual practice, metacognition, and cultural evolution.
