Rewilding Eco-Civilization: Rooting a Life-Place Culture in Watershed Consciousness and the Dream of the Earth

Friday, November 10, 2023 from 5:00–6:30 pm PST

Sharing From the Heart is a monthly initiative where young people from China and the United States come together around the pressing ecological, cultural, and spiritual issues of our time. Through sharing thoughts, personal stories, and actions in local settings, Chinese and American youth will begin building cross-cultural bonds to support a vision of a new, ecological civilization.

This dialogue, Matthew Switzer will trace the role of rewilding and bioregionalism in the wider environmental movement, complementing protest and critique of unsustainability with a proactive movement to reinhabit bioregions. Following a brief history of countercultural influence on post-1968 radical theory, especially in the San Francisco Bay Area, and recent developments in philosophy, cosmology, and dream research, we’ll consider how citizens, policy-makers, and the ecologically inclined can deepen into the life-affirming powers of the universe to align with more equitable energy flow to better serve the wider earth community and address civilization’s more unsustainable dynamics at the close of the Holocene.

SPEAKER: Matthew Switzer
