China Papers – Preliminary Statement
The Living Earth Movement encourages cooperation among nations to moderate and limit anticipated natural catastrophes. We judge that the most important cooperation for the sake of the world is between the United States and China. We celebrate the efforts of these two nations to cooperate but deplore the dominance of competition and even enmity in their relationship. Enmity often blocks understanding of why the other acts as it does. Indeed, enemies often project evil motives on their competitors.
Our project is to provide accessible information on topics that are important for mutual understanding. We believe that the real motives of people are often understandable even when we oppose them. Our goal is not agreement or that mutual criticisms should cease. It is to widen recognition that we are dealing with human beings with whom we disagree about many things but with whom we share a concern for the future of life on this planet. We hope that you agree that our disagreements are not of a kind that justifies ignoring our joint responsibilities to keep the planet habitable.
We hope you will find these short statements accurate and their selections helpful. However, we are highly fallible. If you find factual errors, or it you feel that we have omitted matters of great importance, please help us to improve. The papers below initiate this project not because we judge they are on topics more important than others but because they were the ones that became ready first. Others will follow as they pass our local checks. If you would like to write a paper yourself, please let us know. We will appreciate help.
